How To Choose A Fan Control
Fan controls benefits vary by type, but all have one thing in common: they
help the homeowner or business owner save energy, which helps save money.
To choose a fan control, you must first decide which features are important to
you, such as programmable, clock display, variable speeds, continuous speeds,
and ability to control functions (i.e. light and fan) independently.
Some fan controls, such as a programmable bath control fan can replace a
traditional wall switch for both the bathroom light and bath fan. The control
enables you to operate the fan either continuously at variable speeds or
intermittently, while also allowing independent light and fan control. Typical
features include 24 hour programming, coupled with a LED clock display.
A fan speed control enables the user to designate a desired speed or air on a
ventilation device. Variable speed controls can be controlled in increments (2
speed or 4 speed, for instance) or continuously. The multiple fan speed control
is a highly desired fan control feature.
Dehumidistat and humidistat controls are helpful in turning off a ventilation
system once the relative humidity reaches a predetermined level. With preset
time controls, the fan is prevented from manually being shut off; an important
consideration in preventing bacteria and mold growth in a bathroom, both in a
residential and retail setting. While these types of controls are likely used in
residential bathrooms to control excessive moisture, they are helpful in damp
basements, restrooms, warehouses, and air conditioned rooms in industrial and
commercial establishments alike.
Most modern fan controls are Energy Star efficient and remain programmed even in
the event of a power outage.
